APF member Stephen Aquilar-Milan , director of Research with EUFO, The European Futures Observatory, will bring a session on "Unlocking the Future with Matrix Games." Over the course of 2020, EUFO is running a number of games for stakeholders, in conjunction with APF's Emerging Fellows Programme.  APF Chair, Jay Gary, will host the event.

Aguilar-Milan  will ask, "How can a gaming technique be used to unfold a futures narrative? Can gaming techniques generate interesting emergent futures? Can they deliver a structured conversation to highlight the contours of an emergent future? Ought futurists to be doing this?"

There comes a point where abstract futures analysis has to be given an anchor in both time and place. In the context of a game, this determines the subject of the game, the time frame in which it occurs, and who the actors will be. During this session we will discuss EUFO's latest matrix game, "The Unfrozen North" that was placed for the defence sector. The Arctic isn't entirely a blank canvass at the moment. There are infrastructure resources that the actors can call upon, but they are very sparse. This suggests that much of the coming three decades out to 2050 will be spent in building out the means of commercial exploitation. Is that how we see the future unfolding? If so, who will gain the most? At what cost?

This is a members-only event. The meeting will last 60 minutes, and include discussion about the use of diverse foresight methods to "work the future." Breakout discussions will consider:

  • How have you seen/ or used matrix games within the context of practice as professional futurist?
  • How could you use the Unfrozen North within your context?
  • What value does "gaming the future" provide, as opposed to other facilitated or experiential sessions?

To prepare, APF members should read Aguilar-Milan's latest blog on "The Futurist: The Unfrozen North- Turn 1 2025".

This members-only MeetUp will be hosted at both 12 noon and 5:00 pm London time for those in different time zones (Time Zone Converter). The best of both live programs will be recorded for members who wish to view the archive.
