APF First Friday: Disruption as a Springboard for Creating Impact & Sustainable Value
10:00 a.m. ET
Aug 2, 2024
Zoom
Get an advance preview of Roger Spitz’s next book slated for publication in September 2024 - Disrupt With Impact: Achieve Business Success in an Unpredictable World. The world does not need another generic techno-optimist book narrowly focused on formulaic innovation or business optimization recipes. Rather than getting bogged down by fleeting trends, this book prioritizes signals over noise, investigating the fundamentals of underlying change and evaluating their next-order impacts. From tackling major challenges like sustainability and artificial intelligence to navigating geopolitical shifts, disinformation and cybersecurity risks, be empowered to explore uncharted waters with a compass calibrated for the unpredictable. Roger has dedicated his career to advising boards, leadership teams, and investors on strategy under uncertainty. The book distills the futures intelligence garnered from a rich tapestry of experiences. It discards tired and outdated formulas, recognizing the diminishing effectiveness of pre-cooked playbooks in our unpredictable world. Ultimately the true impact of innovation isn’t in its disruptiveness. Rather, it lies in its ability to ignite hope, unlock new possibilities, and catalyze positive transformations across systems.

Creating Horizontal Spaces for Participatory Futures - The Case of Transform Methodology
TRANSFORM is an innovative methodology that leverages the power of shared food preparation to facilitate meaningful dialogue and collaboration around shaping collective futures. Developed in response to the limitations of traditional stakeholder engagement approaches, TRANSFORM creates inclusive spaces where diverse participants can explore challenges and opportunities through embodied, sensory experiences.
By intertwining food-related activities with futures thinking, TRANSFORM transcends conventional foresight tools, emphasizing collective belief in and mapping of pathways toward preferred futures. This approach has enabled stakeholders, from farmers and chefs to policymakers, to engage in candid discussions, break down power dynamics, and collectively envision sustainable development trajectories for their communities.
TRANSFORM has been successfully applied in various contexts, including online community gatherings, speculative experiences for corporate executives, and participatory government planning processes. In each case, the methodology has proven effective in fostering authentic dialogue, inspiring action-oriented thinking, and cultivating a shared sense of agency and ownership among participants.

Oceania Fireside Chat #2- Putting Human behaviour at the Centre of the strategic Foresight with Dr. Trish Lavery
6:30 AEST
July 3, 2024
Zoom
The integration of behavioural science research into strategic foresight methodologies provides a multi-disciplinary perspective that allows for the development of robust public policy that is able to respond to the complexities of an increasingly uncertain world. Dr Lavery has pioneered a method of putting human behaviour at the centre of strategic foresight processes to bring a more nuanced understanding of how humans respond to societal disruptions. By drawing upon a rich body of behavioural scientific literature, Dr Lavery brings to light the complexities of human behaviour and provide examples of how people might respond to change in ways that may at first seem surprising, irrational or unexpected.

First Friday: Codesigning Foresight Games
10:00 a.m. PT
Jun 14, 2024
Zoom
Games are a powerful medium for exploring possible futures but they can be intimidating to design. Randy has designed dozens of games, often in collaboration with large organizations like the UN or WEF. In this talk, he'll present the collaborative design process he uses for creating foresight games that are fun and effective. He'll walk through the steps of the design process, calling out how to derisk the game and keep the team aligned. Along the way, he'll share specific advice on when to use different design patterns; how to empower stakeholders to contribute, even if it's their first time designing a game; and how to help facilitators successfully run the game.

Engineering planning methods are relatively linear and predictive – it generally assumes similar conditions to the present, in the future. However, this is not reality. In this session we will look at a pilot project where we merged qualitative data (from using strategic foresight methods) into traditional engineering planning.
